Ethnic conflicts intensify in western Sudan

The conflict in western Sudan has reached dangerous levels, with escalating violence in the El-Fasher region of North Darfur causing grave concern for human rights. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has reported indiscriminate attacks using explosive weapons by both sides, resulting in the deaths of 43 people, including women and children, in clashes between the Sudanese armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces since April 14.

The situation is particularly dire for the residents of El-Fasher, who are trapped in the town as the fighting rages on, with little access to essential supplies due to hindered deliveries. Ethnic tensions have also played a significant role in the conflict, with reports indicating attacks on villages primarily inhabited by the African Zaghawa ethnic community by the Rapid Support Forces.

The UN has called for immediate de-escalation and an end to the conflict, urging both parties to ensure the protection of civilians, grant safe passage for those wishing to leave, and facilitate humanitarian access. The situation in western Sudan is critical and requires urgent action to protect civilians, end violence, and provide necessary aid to affected populations.
