**Fatshimetrie – Socio-political actors in North Kivu unite against persistent insecurity**
Amidst escalating insecurity in North Kivu, socio-political actors recently convened for a three-day workshop aimed at formulating actionable recommendations to enhance security in the region. The workshop culminated in the presentation of a series of key recommendations on April 25, intended for adoption by military authorities and security services.
A pivotal proposal that emerged from the workshop was the establishment of a security alert system and the formation of a joint committee comprising members of civil society and provincial elected officials. This committee is tasked with closely monitoring the security situation and advocating for an effective emergency plan to address ongoing insecurity.
Moreover, there was a strong emphasis on the importance of strengthening arms control in Goma through targeted searches, strategic closures, military police patrols, and setting up checkpoints. These measures aim to curb the circulation of illegal weapons and prevent armed violence in the region.
Participants also underscored the need to reinforce discipline within military units, particularly the 11th Main Defense Brigade, known as “Satan2,” which has been implicated in security breaches. Restoring rigorous control over weapons and depots to prevent the dispersion of war munitions was highlighted as crucial to secure management of military equipment.
To enhance transparency and identify groups inciting security unrest, socio-political actors called for the crackdown on illegal dungeons, specifically those operated by the Wazalendo militia – allies of the Congolese army. Additionally, they proposed providing distinctive outfits and insignia to Wazalendo fighters for easy identification in the field.
The collective efforts of socio-political actors in North Kivu signify a significant stride towards mitigating security risks in the region. If rigorously implemented, these recommendations could foster a peaceful and stable environment long-awaited by local residents. It is imperative for the competent authorities to take decisive action to translate these proposals into reality and ensure the safety of all individuals.
