The UNTAP Innovative Forum: catalyst for student innovation in Nigeria

The UNTAP Innovative Forum held at the University of Nigeria at Enugu Campus (UNEC) showcased innovative projects by eight selected students, aiming to attract industry players and potential sponsors. Themed “Presenting Innovative Ideas from a Creative Forum,” the event emphasized the creativity and talent of both students and faculty members.

Professor Geraldine Ugwuonah, Director of UNTAP, stressed the event’s significance in fostering young individuals to express their innovative ideas while providing support through mentors and funding. She underlined the importance of better preparing students for the workforce to address unemployment issues among inadequately skilled graduates.

Dr. Chinedum Aranotu, Manager of UNTAP, highlighted the center’s pivotal role since its establishment in 2015 in nurturing student inventors with their innovative projects. Sharing success stories like that of Aaron Esumeh, who evolved into the CEO of Greenage Technologies with UNTAP’s guidance, demonstrated the impact of their support and supervision.

The participation of investors like Emeka Nwandu, the proprietor of Bon Sunshine Hotel in Enugu, showcased how UNTAP’s initiatives contribute to job creation and backing renewable energy projects. Nwandu’s pledge of financial aid for Civil Engineering student Victory Wellington’s project underscored the valuable connection between students and industry stakeholders.

Victory Wellington’s project, focusing on renewable energies to combat power shortages, symbolized the dedication and creativity of young entrepreneurs in offering practical solutions to societal issues. Their aspiration to deliver reliable and affordable power supply for Nigerian businesses and households highlighted the transformative potential of the youth.

By endorsing these student initiatives, UNTAP provides a significant platform to catalyze innovation and entrepreneurship amongst the youth. These projects not only represent evolving ideas but also serve as impactful solutions that promote Nigeria’s economic and social progress.
