Recent heavy rains in Tanzania have resulted in devastating floods, claiming the lives of 155 individuals and affecting over 200,000 others, according to Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa. The situation has worsened with increasing rainfall, especially in the coastal region and the capital, Dar es Salaam.
The El Niño climatic phenomenon has played a significant role in the torrential rains, leading to floods that have damaged road infrastructure, bridges, and railways. Schools have been forced to close, and emergency services are rescuing trapped populations.
Prime Minister Majaliwa has urged residents in low-lying areas to move to higher ground while ensuring that aid reaches those in need. Over 51,000 homes have been affected by the inclement weather.
In addition to Tanzania, neighboring countries such as Burundi and Kenya have also experienced flooding, exacerbating the regional crisis. In Kenya, 35 deaths have been reported, with the toll expected to rise as floods continue to wreak havoc.
In response to the crisis, Kenyan President William Ruto chaired a flood response meeting and instructed the National Youth Service to provide land for those affected by the floods.
