Nigerians express displeasure over MultiChoice DStv and GOtv tariff increase

Nigerian consumers have recently voiced their discontent over MultiChoice’s decision to raise prices for its DStv and GOtv services effective May 1, 2024. The announcement of this price increase, made by the acting CEO of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) on Channels Television, has sparked widespread criticism and protests across the country.

Many citizens have strongly condemned this second tariff hike in less than a year, calling on the federal government to intervene and explore alternatives to break what they perceive as a monopoly in the market. In response to these concerns, the FCCPC CEO assured that industry players would review the price increase to ensure Nigerian subscribers receive fair value. Additionally, actions have been taken against discriminatory practices and violations by other companies such as the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).

The new DStv package prices are as follows:
– Premium: ₦37,000
– Compact Plus: ₦25,000
– Compact: ₦15,700
– Confam: ₦9,300
– Yanga: ₦5,100
– Padi: ₦3,600
– HDPVR Access Service: ₦5,000
– Access fee: ₦5,000
– XtraView: ₦5,000

The prices for GOtv packages have also been impacted by this increase.

Given the consumer discontent and challenges with the current pricing policy, it is crucial for authorities and industry stakeholders to take effective measures to protect subscriber interests and ensure fair competition in the satellite television market in Nigeria.
