Hope Hostel: a refuge for asylum seekers in Rwanda

As the world grapples with an unparalleled migration crisis, a hotel in Rwanda, nestled in the wooded suburbs of Kigali, has recently undergone a transformative shift in its operations.

Previously known as Hope Hostel, the facility had remained vacant since its opening two years ago. However, it has now found a new purpose as it prepares to welcome asylum seekers from the United Kingdom.

Managed by the Association of Student Survivors of the Genocide, the hotel, formerly known as AERG Hostel, once provided sanctuary to young orphans of the tragic 1994 genocide in which thousands of Tutsis and moderate Hutus lost their lives.

Under the guidance of director Bakina Ismael, Hope Hostel is poised to offer top-notch services to asylum seekers. Ismael expressed his commitment to providing a warm reception and high-quality hospitality to those seeking refuge at the facility.

The Rwandan government has designated the 100-bed hostel as a transit center, showcasing its unique approach to assisting asylum seekers. In light of this collaboration, the facility receives partial funding from British taxpayers through a significant deal signed between the two nations in 2022.

The partnership aims to address the challenge of migrants crossing the Channel, with the UK government planning to transfer illegal immigrants or boat arrivals to Rwanda for asylum processing, contingent on successful applications.

While the British Parliament has approved legislation to implement this initiative, critics have raised concerns about the feasibility and ethics of sending migrants thousands of kilometers away to a country where they may not wish to settle.

Although no migrants have yet been transferred to Rwanda, the British government intends to launch flights beginning July. Despite differing opinions on the matter, this innovative approach represents a collaborative effort to address the complex issue of irregular migration.
