G7 meeting in Italy: Condemnation of M23 attacks in the DRC and Call for Concerted Diplomatic Solutions

The recent G7 meeting in Italy addressed the concerning situation in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and strongly condemned the renewed attacks by the M23 Movement, backed by Rwandan forces. Emphasizing the need for a diplomatic resolution, the G7 called for collective efforts with regional countries to address the underlying causes of the violence.

Reaffirming support for the Luanda and Nairobi peace processes, the G7 stressed the importance of disarmament, demobilization, and community recovery programs, with a focus on the inclusion of women and youth. Additionally, they expressed readiness to collaborate with regional nations to promote accountability for human rights violations and uphold international humanitarian law.

In response to the escalating humanitarian crisis and human rights abuses, the G7 denounced all armed groups operating in the DRC and demanded an immediate cessation of hostilities. They specifically called for the withdrawal of M23 from occupied territories in accordance with the Luanda agreements and urged all armed groups to disarm and withdraw from controlled areas.

The United Nations Security Council is set to discuss the DRC security crisis on April 24, with a presentation of the semi-annual report on the Great Lakes region by UN Secretary-General’s special envoy, Huang Xia. This meeting holds crucial importance in finding coordinated solutions to end the suffering in eastern DRC.

In conclusion, the G7 stressed the urgency of joint action to resolve the crisis in the DRC and called for practical measures to restore peace in the Great Lakes region. Diplomacy and regional cooperation are deemed essential in finding lasting solutions to the conflicts in Africa and preserving global peace.
