In the heart of Kongo-Central, the Kimpese General Reference Hospital finds itself in a delicate situation which requires urgent intervention. After being hit by a devastating tornado recently, the establishment saw its roof severely damaged, endangering the lives and health of the patients hosted there. The area’s chief medical officer, Dr Jean-Claude Batalekuau, launched a poignant appeal for help to enable the repair of this crucial roof.

The distress of the medical team is palpable in the face of the difficult working conditions in which they must operate. Patients are forced to share already cramped rooms, while being exposed to bad weather and water infiltration caused by incessant rain. This situation, worthy of a nightmare, compromises not only the comfort of patients, but also the quality of medical care provided.

Despite the extent of the material damage, a glimmer of hope remains: no deaths have been reported among hospital staff and patients. This demonstrates the resilience and solidarity that characterize the medical community and residents of the Kimpese region. However, the cost of repairs to be carried out to get the establishment back on its feet is estimated at a significant amount, thus jeopardizing the continuity of care and essential medical services.

The urgency of the situation is particularly felt at the hospital’s central office, where vaccine storage is at risk due to damage to the cold chain. The loss of all central office documentation, as well as computers and medical equipment, adds a layer of complexity to an already critical situation.

Therefore, it is imperative to mobilize resources and supports to enable the rapid rehabilitation of the Kimpese General Referral Hospital. The health and well-being of patients and medical staff cannot be compromised by dilapidated infrastructure. By joining forces and resources, we can offer a better future to this essential establishment which works for the health and well-being of an entire community.
