The surprising underside of an anti-terrorist operation: when suspects surrender with explosive devices

In a recent military operation, soldiers apprehended surrendering troops who were part of a group of suspects, all under the age of 30. Among the individuals, two improvised explosive devices, two mobile phones, and N53,000 were recovered. According to Lieutenant-Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi, spokesperson for the armed forces, the suspects confessed to being instructed by their Boko Haram commanders to plant explosive devices on the roads leading to Doron Baga and a fish farm in Baga, Kukawa local government.

Instead of carrying out the orders, the soldiers decided to abandon their mission, escape with the explosive devices, and surrender to the Multinational Joint Task Force of the Lake Chad Basin (MLTF). This shift in behavior may be attributed to the recent non-kinetic operation conducted by the FMMLT and the sector’s strategy of engaging with relevant sources on a personal level, showcasing the efficacy of psychological operations in combating terrorism.

This scenario underscores the significance of a comprehensive approach in tackling violent extremism. Emphasizing not just military actions but also psychological and social factors that can influence extremist group members’ decisions is crucial. Directly interacting with affected individuals, spreading positive messages, and advocating for peaceful alternatives can greatly contribute to deradicalization and reintegration into society.

This case underscores the intricate nature of the fight against terrorism and stresses the need for a multifaceted strategy to effectively address security threats. By focusing on prevention, deterrence, and rehabilitation, authorities can not only weaken terrorist organizations but also enhance communities’ resilience against extremism. This requires close collaboration between security forces, government bodies, local stakeholders, and the public to ensure a holistic and sustainable response to terrorism and violent extremism.
