DRC-Rwanda conflict: the call to action to preserve Congo’s sovereignty

In the heart of Central Africa, the ongoing conflict between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda continues to escalate regional tensions. Belgian ambassador to Kinshasa, Roxane de Bilderling, recently addressed concerns over the presence of Rwandan troops in Congolese territory during a press conference in Goma.

De Bilderling’s strong statements emphasized the international condemnation of this military intrusion and urged the DRC to take decisive actions to secure its borders. Emphasizing previous demands for the withdrawal of Rwandan troops and an end to support for the M23 rebel group, the ambassador stressed the necessity of unified efforts to protect Congo’s sovereignty.

Furthermore, de Bilderling highlighted the option for the DRC to lodge a complaint with the International Court of Justice for violating international borders. This legal recourse could lead to global recognition of the situation and the implementation of effective measures to restore peace in the region.

Additionally, the Congolese government has called for the intervention of the International Criminal Court to investigate crimes committed in North Kivu province since the beginning of 2022. This move, supported by Minister of Justice Rose Mutombo, demonstrates the government’s commitment to uncovering the atrocities perpetrated by the M23 rebels, with alleged support from Rwanda.

In essence, the challenging political environment in the Great Lakes region necessitates collective action by international stakeholders to promote stability and peace. Calls for accountability and justice, such as those made by Ambassador Roxane de Bilderling and the Congolese government, underscore the imperative for a cohesive and resolute response to the existing challenges.
