Virunga National Park: Between Challenges and Hopes

The Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo marks its 99th anniversary as a treasured gem of African biodiversity. Established in 1925, this expansive sanctuary spans nearly 790,000 hectares, encompassing diverse ecosystems from savannahs to the snow-capped peaks of Rwenzori at over 5,000 meters above sea level.

Renowned for its abundant wildlife, the park is home to iconic species such as mountain gorillas, hippos, and active volcanoes like Mount Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira. These extraordinary features attract researchers and tourists globally.

Despite its beauty and richness, Virunga National Park faces numerous challenges. The presence of armed groups like the M23 rebellion and the FDLR poses continuous security threats to the park and its wildlife, fueling poaching and jeopardizing conservation efforts. Ongoing armed conflicts disrupt endangered species monitoring and weaken protection measures for vulnerable mountain gorillas.

Recent incidents have endangered crucial park infrastructure, exemplified by attacks on the Rwanguba hydroelectric power station site. These assaults escalate tensions and hinder sustainable development initiatives in the area. In response, the European Union has urged the withdrawal of armed groups to safeguard conservation projects and natural resources.

Nevertheless, Virunga National Park remains a cornerstone of conservation in Africa, boasting UNESCO World Heritage Site status and receiving support from the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation and international partners. As it nears its centenary, the park embodies hope and dedication to preserving global biodiversity, underscoring the critical need to persist in conservation efforts, even amidst challenging circumstances.
