The peaceful uprising in Agadez: Citizens demand the departure of American troops

The city of Agadez, Niger, was rocked by an unprecedented demonstration where hundreds of individuals gathered to demand the departure of American troops stationed in the country. Organized by civil society groups, this mass mobilization follows Nigerien authorities’ denunciation of military cooperation agreements with the United States, leading to the start of the withdrawal of US soldiers.

The decision to withdraw American troops was met with relief by demonstrators in Agadez, who felt that the presence of these soldiers had not yielded tangible benefits for the local population over the past twelve years. With a lack of significant development projects such as schools or water facilities, residents believe it is time for foreign troops to exit the region.

Slimane Ibrahim, the third vice-president of the regional committee supporting the authorities, stressed the importance of Niger’s security being ensured by its own citizens rather than foreign forces. He highlighted that the people of Niger seek partnerships focused more on economic development than military alliances.

Niger’s decision to welcome Russian instructors and enhance ties with Russia signifies the country’s intent to diversify its international partnerships and bolster its sovereignty. The forthcoming visit by US officials to finalize the troop withdrawal plan emphasizes the need to manage this transition peacefully while respecting all parties’ interests.

The mobilization in Agadez advocating for the departure of American troops reflects the Nigerien people’s aspiration to control their destiny, emphasizing national sovereignty and economic growth. This shift marks a significant turning point in Niger’s international relations, paving the way for constructive cooperation with the global community.
