Agents of the Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer du Congo (SNCC) recently took a stand against a decree issued by the interim governor of Maniema, Mr. Afani Idrissa Mangala. This decree called for the decommissioning of plots within the Makuta camp, a move that the SNCC agents viewed as unjust and a threat to their rights.
The SNCC’s legal representative, supported by several employees, strongly criticized the decree, labeling it as a direct violation of workers’ rights. They highlighted that these plots were legitimately allocated and purchased by SNCC agents as compensation for overdue salaries. The response from the agents and their legal counsel reflects their bewilderment at what they perceive as an arbitrary and unfair decision.
In a statement, the SNCC’s legal counsel expressed, “We cannot stay silent in the face of this act of expropriation orchestrated by the interim governor of Maniema. It is an intolerable assault on the essential rights of SNCC employees. These plots, acquired lawfully in exchange for services rendered, should not be revoked in such a manner.”
Kimuanga Kisimba, the head of personnel at SNCC, echoed this sentiment, denouncing the government’s actions. He emphasized the gravity of a government official unilaterally stripping individuals of their property rights, directly conflicting with the principles safeguarding private property.
Demanding the annulment of the decree before resorting to legal action, SNCC agents urged the provincial authority to reconsider their stance. They vowed to take further measures to safeguard their legitimate interests in response to this unacceptable development.
The demonstration by SNCC agents sheds light on a significant injustice, prompting reflection on societal values pertaining to property rights and contractual obligations in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is crucial for authorities to acknowledge these valid concerns and uphold the rights and welfare of the workers who uphold the company’s operations.
