International solidarity in Goma: The humanitarian challenges of eastern DRC closely scrutinized by the UN

Goma, a city emblematic of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s eastern region, recently received a visit of great significance. A delegation of sixteen UN member states, comprising eleven ambassadors from the European Union, chose to establish themselves in this area confronted with recurrent humanitarian crises. Their objective was to evaluate the situation on the ground, identify the urgent needs of the local population, and promote financial support as well as appropriate humanitarian aid.

At the forefront of this delegation was Bruno Lemarquis, the deputy special representative of the UN Secretary-General in the DRC and the Coordinator of humanitarian operations. He expressed grave concerns about the critical situation prevailing in the eastern part of the DRC. Lemarquis emphasized that the enduring crisis in the North Kivu province cannot be overlooked. The resulting instability has compelled numerous families to repeatedly flee, leading them into dire and vulnerable living conditions.

The visit provided the delegation with a first-hand view of the extensive humanitarian challenges that the local population encounters daily. The pressing needs for food assistance, access to clean water, healthcare, education, and housing demand immediate and concerted action from the global community.

In acknowledgment of the overwhelming reality, the delegation reiterated its commitment to upholding the ongoing efforts aimed at delivering a sustainable response to the crisis in eastern DRC. They stressed the necessity of a comprehensive approach that addresses both the humanitarian emergency and the imperative to devise enduring solutions to secure the well-being of vulnerable populations.

The visit by the UN diplomats to Goma underscored the vital importance of international solidarity and collaboration in tackling the intricate humanitarian issues that persist in the region. It is crucial that this show of support translates into concrete and lasting measures to instill hope for change and advancement among the suffering populations in the East of the DRC.
