Non-payment of salaries of professors at the University of Kisangani: a crisis threatening education in the DRC

The ongoing conflict surrounding the delay in paying professors’ salaries at the University of Kisangani sheds light on the challenges faced by academic staff in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This recurring issue not only jeopardizes the financial security of teachers but also undermines the standard of teaching and research at the university.

The Association of Professors of the University of Kisangani (APUKIS) has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the situation, emphasizing the government’s lack of regard for academic staff. The repercussions of these delayed payments are profound, impacting the dignity of teachers who struggle to meet their basic needs.

Moreover, this predicament results in a decline in the quality of education and research, as educators are compelled to prioritize their daily survival over their academic pursuits. It is imperative for the government to fulfill its obligations and honor the Bibwa agreements by disbursing salaries on time.

APUKIS rightly demands the regular disbursement of payments before the month’s end to prevent further inconveniences. Failure to promptly address this issue may prompt the association to pursue legal avenues to uphold teachers’ legitimate rights.

Recognizing the pivotal role of academic staff in advancing education and research in the DRC, the government must implement concrete measures to ensure timely payment of teachers’ salaries, safeguarding the stability and quality of higher education in the country.

Ultimately, it is vital to respect and appreciate the contributions of teachers, who are instrumental in imparting knowledge and fostering intellectual development in Congolese society. Their financial well-being must not be compromised, and it is incumbent upon the authorities to uphold their rights diligently.
