Humanitarian crisis in Ituri: Civilians in danger from militia abuses

In the province of Ituri, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the recent events in the territory of Djugu have sparked serious concerns about the safety of civilians. The brutal killings carried out by the militiamen of the CODECO armed group, such as the massacre in the Matongo village where twenty individuals, including women and children, were mercilessly slaughtered, have sent shockwaves through the community.

Robert Basiloko, the president of civil society in Djugu, has vehemently condemned these barbaric acts and urged the authorities to take swift and concrete measures to protect the civilian population. The government must implement effective strategies to halt these atrocities and ensure the safety of the region’s inhabitants.

The escalating attacks by armed groups in the Banyali Kilo sector underscore the persistent instability plaguing the area. Retaliatory violence and indiscriminate killings are escalating tensions and instilling fear among the population.

Reports of multiple militias conducting inexplicable incursions have left the region shrouded in insecurity and apprehension. The occurrences of kidnappings, summary executions, and revenge attacks have shattered families and traumatized entire communities.

In light of this dire situation, urgent actions are imperative to restore order and security in Ituri province. Safeguarding civilians must be the top priority, and tangible steps are needed to break the cycle of violence and terror.

The residents of Djugu and its environs deserve to live in tranquility, within a stable and secure environment. It is time for the international community to rally in support of efforts to bring stability to this conflict-ravaged region. Peace and security are inherent rights that every individual should enjoy, and it is our collective duty to unite in ending the human tragedies tearing apart the social fabric of Ituri province.
