The recent Conference on Communication and Climate Change in Africa held in Keffi underscored the critical role of effective communication in raising awareness about climate issues among communities and enhancing their ability to adapt to environmental changes. Malam Idris Mohammed, the Minister of Information and National Guidance, emphasized the significance of timely dissemination of climate information to help communities prepare and take proactive measures against climate change challenges.
Jointly organized with the Institute of Strategic Communication for National Development of Nasarawa State University, the conference brought together communication and development experts to explore strategies for bolstering African populations’ resilience to the impacts of climate change. Malam Idris Mohammed highlighted the necessity of educating and enlightening communication stakeholders to empower them to inform citizens about climate change effects and promote responsible and sustainable practices.
Commending President Bola Tinubu’s government for its climate change management initiatives, Malam Ali Mohammed Ali, Director General of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), stressed the urgency of swift and efficient climate change communication to combat global warming’s adverse effects. He urged continued collaboration among communication professionals to deepen knowledge and share best practices in climate change communication.
In a world vulnerable to fake news and misinformation, Dr. Ike Neliaku, President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), underscored the necessity of qualified communication experts to counter these challenges and ensure accurate and reliable information for the public. Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State pledged his support for climate change awareness initiatives and sustainable development projects in the region.
The conference emphasized the pressing need for collective efforts to educate communities about climate challenges and encourage responsible behavior for a sustainable future for all.
