Nigeria’s aviation sector is under intense scrutiny following the interception of several violations of aviation regulations by surveillance officers. Captain Chris Najomo, the acting Director General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), has implemented strict measures to ensure compliance with regulatory standards in the private aviation industry.
In a bid to crack down on violators, the Authority issued a stern warning to private jet operators in March and deployed officers to monitor their activities at airport terminals nationwide. This increased surveillance led to the discovery of three private operators who had breached the provisions of their Non-Commercial Flight Permits (PNCF) and Part 9114 of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations, 2023.
To maintain a zero-tolerance stance on regulatory violations, the NCAA will conduct a comprehensive review of compliance with regulatory requirements for all PNCF holders within the next 72 hours. This initiative aims to bolster control and ensure that operators adhere strictly to the prevailing regulations.
Further efforts to clean up the general aviation sector include a reassessment of all PNCF holders by April 19 to verify their compliance with regulatory requirements. All PNCF holders are mandated to submit relevant documents to the Authority within the next 72 hours.
It is important to note that in 2023, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), expressed concerns about the commercial use of private jets and instructed an end to such practices. In response, the NCAA had already warned holders of permits for non-commercial flights against engaging in passenger, freight, or mail transportation for remuneration.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nigeria remains committed to prioritizing regulation and compliance. These new measures are aimed at ensuring that air operators adhere to existing regulations to safeguard the safety and integrity of the country’s aviation sector. Travelers are urged to select legally authorized airline operators for their charter flight needs to ensure a safe and standards-compliant experience.
