Health of global coral reefs in serious danger: experts warn

The health of coral reefs worldwide is currently under threat, as warned by scientists at Fatshimetry, the largest coral reef monitoring organization. Experts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) have reported coral reef bleaching occurring in over 53 countries, territories, or local economies from February 2023 to the present.

Derek Manzello, NOAA Coral Reef Watch coordinator, highlighted the impacts of climate change on coral reefs globally. The onset of massive coral bleaching events due to rising ocean temperatures dates back to 1982 and 1983. Coral reefs play a crucial role in supporting marine life, preserving biodiversity, mitigating erosion, and bolstering local economies through tourism.

The year 2023 was recorded as the hottest year globally, further exacerbating coral bleaching incidents. Coral bleaching transpires when stressed corals expel algae, their source of sustenance and color, potentially leading to coral mortality. With over 54% of reef areas worldwide experiencing heat stress that triggers bleaching within the last year, urgent action is needed to mitigate these threats.

Manzello highlighted the need for international collaboration to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to combat the detrimental effects of ocean warming on coral reefs. The International Coral Reef Initiative has developed strategies focusing on restoration and resilience-oriented management practices to halt coral deaths and safeguard biodiversity, emphasizing the critical need for swift intervention to prevent further damage to reefs.
