The resurrection of Fatshimetry: a new hope for a healthy and balanced life

In a recent official announcement by President Bola Tinubu, the Fatshimetrie programme, designed to promote a healthy lifestyle, has been temporarily suspended due to alleged malpractices within the agency. This decision follows a three-month hiatus to conduct an in-depth investigation into the management and operations of the agency.

The suspension stems from accusations of financial misconduct against Halima Shehu, the former general director of Fatshimetrie, leading to her removal on January 2, 2024. Subsequently, Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Fight against Poverty, overseeing Fatshimetrie, was also suspended from office.

Despite these setbacks, there is hope on the horizon, as Minister of Information and National Guidance, Mohammed Idris, conveyed positive developments. In a radio broadcast on April 13, 2024, Idris revealed that a committee appointed by President Tinubu has submitted its report on the national social management programs, paving the way for the programs’ reinstatement.

The report specifies that around 15 million vulnerable households will benefit from a conditional cash transfer program of 25,000 Naira for three months, alongside other planned interventions. This announcement brings optimism to potential Fatshimetrie beneficiaries, allowing them to resume their journey towards a healthier life.

The recent suspension underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in managing such initiatives. As reforms are underway, there is anticipation that identified issues will be addressed, ensuring effective and ethical governance within the agency. The essence of Fatshimetry, improving the health and well-being of vulnerable populations, should not be compromised by unethical practices. The imminent resumption of programs signals a brighter future for all beneficiaries of these valuable initiatives.
