Tense electoral campaigns in Togo ahead of parliamentary elections: Stakes and growing tensions

The tense electoral atmosphere in Togo preceding the parliamentary elections has sparked concerns among various political factions in the country. The proposed new constitution by the president, aiming to do away with presidential elections, has provoked opposition and public uproar.

Scheduled for April 29, the parliamentary elections have seen the National Alliance for Change (ANC) party staging protests, some of which were called off following government bans citing potential public disorder.

The ANC, pushing for change, seeks to secure a majority in the National Assembly to amplify its influence. Meanwhile, the Union for the Republic party, founded by President Faure Gnassingbé in 2012, has also entered the campaign arena.

Political analyst Paul Amegakpo predicts a potential for the opposition to clinch several National Assembly seats, potentially hindering constitutional modifications by the current administration.

With over 2,000 candidates vying for 113 deputy seats and 179 regional councilor positions, the contenders have a two-week window to sway the 4 million eligible voters before the polling day.

These parliamentary elections are pivotal for Togo’s political landscape, underlining the significance of citizens’ voices and their role in shaping the nation’s future.
