Lively debate on the awarding of contracts in Kinshasa

The recent recommendations by the Regulatory Authority for Subcontracting in the Private Sector (ARSP) regarding major contracts with companies like Tenke Fungurume Mining (TFM) have sparked a heated debate in the Congolese economy. The decision to favor 25 companies for these contracts, particularly in the province of Lualaba, has raised concerns about transparency and fairness in the procurement process.

Germain Mpungwe, the provincial president of the Federation of Congolese Businesses in Lualaba, criticized the fact that 80% of the recommended companies are not affiliated with the Federation. This exclusion has led to financial losses for local companies associated with the FEC Lualaba, who are now missing out on significant commercial opportunities.

Mpungwe expressed his frustration during a meeting in Kolwezi, emphasizing the need to understand the selection criteria used by the ARSP and the lack of consideration for local businesses. Plans are underway to address these concerns through a memorandum to be presented to the ARSP, advocating for collaboration between regulatory authorities and local economic players.

Despite reservations expressed by the national FEC regarding the published list of recommendations, the organization remains committed to working with the ARSP to support the presidential vision for economic empowerment of Congolese entrepreneurs. This controversy underscores the importance of promoting fairness and transparency in contract awards to local companies, highlighting governance and collaboration challenges in fostering a conducive business environment for economic development.
