Fight against sexual violence in the DRC: a fight for peace and justice

The issue of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo constitutes a major issue both on a humanitarian level and in terms of women’s rights. The fight against these abuses remains an arduous battle despite the efforts made by organizations such as the Synergy of Women for Victims of Sexual Violence (SFVS), which recently commemorated its 20 years of existence.

The intervention by Justine Masika, coordinator of the SFVS, underlines the scale of the problem, with more than 50,000 cases of sexual violence recorded in 2023 in the east of the country, particularly in North Kivu. These chilling figures highlight the persistence of violence despite the actions taken to combat it.

It is clear that the restoration of peace is essential to have any hope of putting an end to these atrocities. Without an environment of security and stability, it is difficult to imagine a peaceful future for women living in conflict zones. The President of the Rwanda Women’s Network, Yassin Ntunsingwire Musubaho, highlights the crucial role of women in building peace in the Great Lakes region. Their participation in decision-making processes is essential to guarantee lasting and inclusive peace.

Aimerance Nsonga, president of the NGO Femmes Réveilez-vous, insists on the need to lobby leaders to end the crisis in the east of the country. Raising women’s awareness of their rights and actively involving them in conflict prevention are essential actions to change mentalities and build a better future.

The contribution of the SFVS to the care of victims of sexual violence is undeniable, with notable advances such as the establishment of specialized courts and health and psychological care programs. However, much remains to be done to eradicate this violence and guarantee the safety and dignity of women in the DRC.

The commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the SFVS was an opportunity to reaffirm the commitment of the organization and its partners to working for peace, justice and gender equality. Participants agreed to strengthen their actions in line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, which recognizes the crucial role of women in promoting peace and security.

Ultimately, the fight against sexual violence in the DRC can only succeed through a holistic approach, combining awareness, prevention, care for victims and the promotion of peace. It is a long-term fight that requires the commitment of everyone, from governments to civil society organizations and ordinary citizens. Together, we can reduce this violence and offer a safer and fairer future for all women in the DRC.
