30 years after the genocide in Rwanda: a universal duty of memory

Rwanda commemorated the sad 30th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi in a poignant ceremony at the BK Arena. President Paul Kagame took the floor to solemnly remind us that his country will never relive the horrors of 1994. With strength and conviction, Kagame declared: “Never again will our people be abandoned to their sad fate.”

In a speech marked by emotion and historical truth, President Kagame pointed out the inaction of Western countries in the face of the genocide, while welcoming the support of African countries who mobilized to help Rwanda in these dark times. . He highlighted the courage and commitment of the African soldiers who came to the aid of his country, deploring the disavowal of the international community.

The presence of foreign dignitaries, such as the leaders of South Africa, Congo, Ethiopia, the Central African Republic and Tanzania, as well as Israeli President Isaac Herzog, marked the importance of this duty universal memory. Former American and French presidents, Bill Clinton and Nicolas Sarkozy, were also present to pay tribute to the victims of the genocide.

The tragic events of 1994, triggered by the attack on the plane carrying President Juvénal Habyarimana, plunged Rwanda into horror. The Tutsis, unjustly accused of having shot down the presidential plane, were the targets of atrocious massacres perpetrated by Hutu extremists, claiming more than 800,000 lives in just over 100 days. Moderate Hutus, who tried to protect members of the Tutsi minority, also paid with their lives for their courage.

This commemoration is a cornerstone in Rwanda’s collective memory, reminding future generations of the tragic consequences of hatred and division. The duty of memory, justice and reconciliation are all pillars on which Rwanda continues to rebuild, with respect for the victims and their heritage. May this commemoration be a poignant reminder of our collective responsibility to prevent such atrocities in the future, and to work towards a more just and humane world for all.
