In the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, there have been recent positive developments in the security situation. The Disarmament, Demobilization, Community Recovery, and Stabilization Program (P-DDRCS) Tanganyika’s communication unit announced that approximately 150 fighters from the SARMA armed group opted to surrender their weapons to military authorities in Kalemie. This surrender process began on March 26th, with the fighters accompanied by their dependents.
During the disarmament operation, the ex-combatants turned in AK-47 rifles, bows, and over 200 poisoned arrows. To assess the needs of these combatants for cantonment, a joint delegation from P-DDRCS and the 22nd brigade of the FARDC visited a potential site in Kalemie to accommodate them. They also inspected the Djimbwe site in preparation for organizing the disarmament and demobilization process.
Presently, the militia, under the leadership of Shabani Kasaï Sarma, has relocated to Kampunda village while awaiting further disarmament and integration into the demobilization process. This surrender marks a positive trend for the Tanganyika region, showcasing a collective yearning for peace and stability after years of conflict. Authorities are committed to assisting these ex-combatants in their transition to civilian life while ensuring ongoing security control.
This optimistic advancement raises hope for stability in the region and emphasizes the significance of disarmament and demobilization in fostering enduring peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
