Freedom of expression under threat: Controversial parole of TikToker Murja Kunya

Title: Freedom of expression in question: The parole of Murja Kunya, controversial TikToker

On March 25, 2024, Justice Nasiru Saminu of the Kano State High Court ordered the release on bail of popular TikToker Murja Kunya while imposing strict conditions. Accused of immoral behavior in violation of Islamic morality laws, Kunya was arrested by the Hisbah religious police and detained since February 20.

The bail order, set at N500,000 with two sureties, one to be a close relative and the other to own landed property in Kano, was made after the young woman had spent over 30 days in prison.

In addition to bail, the judge banned Murja from using social media until the end of the case, threatening arrest by the police commissioner for violations. This restriction has sparked criticism regarding freedom of expression, pointing out that it could constitute an attack on fundamental rights.

Among the voices speaking out against Kunya’s arrest, human rights activist Aisha Yesufu questioned Hisbah’s priorities, stressing that pressing issues like child welfare and family support required greater attention than the actions against the TikToker.

While the case is adjourned until May 16 for further proceedings, debates over freedom of expression and the responsibilities of religious authorities continue to spark discussions.
