“Deterioration of the security situation in the DRC: the warning from the UN Special Representative”

**The UN Special Representative in the DRC warns of the deterioration of the security and humanitarian situation**

In a post-election context, the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to cause concern. During a recent intervention before the UN Security Council by videoconference, Bintou Keita, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, highlighted the rise in tensions and violence in the country.

Despite largely peaceful elections, challenges remain numerous. Violence against women, terrorist attacks and tensions between foreign forces are all factors weighing on the security situation in the DRC.

The Special Representative welcomed the efforts undertaken to guarantee the participation of women in electoral processes, but also highlighted the attacks suffered by them. She also underlined the importance of reforming the security and defense apparatus, a priority for the re-elected government.

Unfortunately, the situation in eastern DRC remains worrying, with a constant deterioration in security. Armed terrorist groups like the M23 continue to expand their territory to the detriment of the civilian population. MONUSCO peacekeepers have even been the target of attacks, endangering peacekeeping efforts.

To ensure stability and security in the DRC, it is crucial that all foreign forces illegally present withdraw, and that armed groups are disarmed. Regional cooperation is also essential to prevent an escalation of tensions and guarantee peace in the region.

In conclusion, despite the persistent challenges, the international community and Congolese authorities must intensify their efforts to end the violence and achieve lasting peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
