“The UN Security Council adopts a resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan: towards lasting peace in the region”

**UN Security Council adopts resolution demanding immediate ceasefire in Gaza for Ramadan**

At a meeting on Monday, March 25, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza region for the month of Ramadan. The resolution also included demanding the release of all hostages captured during the October 7 attack by Hamas in southern Israel.

The proposal received 14 votes in favor, none against and one abstention, resulting in the adoption of resolution 27/28/2024. The United States, which had previously vetoed three similar resolutions, this time decided to abstain, expressing reservations about the content of the resolution.

Following some amendments, the resolution was amended to exclude the term “permanent”, but still emphasized the need for a lasting ceasefire. This modification raised concerns from Russia, but was not accepted due to the lack of necessary support in the Council.

Hamas welcomed the resolution but stressed the need for a permanent ceasefire, as well as its readiness to begin a prisoner exchange process with Israel. In response to this decision, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu canceled an Israeli delegation’s visit to Washington.

This resolution is a turning point awaited by Riyad Mansour, Palestinian ambassador to the UN, who stressed the urgency of putting an end to the violence and atrocities which have already caused the death or mutilation of more than 100,000 Palestinians in Gaza. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stresses the importance of implementing this resolution to avoid tragic consequences.

This decision comes amid growing tensions between the Biden administration and Israel, particularly due to Israeli actions in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. It is crucial that all actors involved respect this resolution to achieve lasting peace in the region.
