The Leopards of wrestling from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) were notably absent from the African championships of the specialty which took place recently in Alexandria, Egypt. This regrettable oversight is attributable to a lack of financial resources and an administrative error by the Ministry of Sports and Leisure.
Indeed, according to the words of the national wrestling technical director, Bernard Basampi, the mission order necessary for the participation of Congolese athletes was signed late by the Minister of Sports, François Kabulo. This delay had harmful consequences, thus preventing Congolese wrestlers from taking part in this important competition.
The preparations for this competition were well advanced from a technical point of view, but logistical and organizational difficulties unfortunately got the better of the participation of Congolese athletes. A frustrating situation for the entire federation which had nevertheless planned to field a significant number of athletes, thus hoping to obtain qualifications for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
It is regrettable to note that despite the determination and work of athletes and coaches, administrative errors and financing problems can compromise their participation in essential international competitions. It is important that sports authorities and governments in general pay greater attention to all sporting disciplines, not just football, in order to allow national talents to shine on the international stage.
This situation highlights the need for better planning, coordination and financial support for the development of sport in the DRC. It is essential to provide athletes with the necessary conditions to train and compete in the best possible conditions, so that they can proudly represent their country on the world stage. Let us hope that measures will be taken to avoid such disappointments in the future and allow Congolese talents to flourish and shine at the highest level.
