“New trends in visas: towards open borders and greater flexibility for international travelers”

Visa policies around the world are constantly evolving to adapt to the challenges of international tourism. According to a recent WIPO report on the issuance of travel visas, there have been significant changes in international regulations, particularly since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.

These changes have given rise to new types of visas, such as “nomadic visas”. These offer travelers greater flexibility in terms of length of stay and travel options.

An interesting trend highlighted by the report is the reduction in the number of people requiring a traditional visa to travel. Indeed, the percentage of the world’s population not requiring a visa has reached a record high of 21%. This figure is a clear increase compared to 2008 and 2018, highlighting the trend towards opening borders.

Among these figures, 14% of the world’s population can now obtain a visa on arrival at airports and ports, up from just 6% in 2008. More countries are adopting e-visa systems, with 18% the world population having access to this option in 2023, compared to only 3% in 2013.

The WIPO report highlights tourist visa regulations by region. The Asia-Pacific stands out as the most open region, particularly in Southeast Asia, East Africa, and the Caribbean. The most significant progress has been seen in South Asia and West Africa.

On the other hand, North and Central Africa, North America, and Northern and Western Europe remain more restrictive regions in terms of visas. However, visa-on-arrival policies are increasingly common in East Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and West Africa.

The report also highlights the importance of an effective visa policy to promote tourism growth. Recommendations such as integrating tourism perspectives into visa strategies, establishing visa waiver programs for low-risk markets, and expanding visa-on-arrival facilities are proposed to simplify international travel and provide a better experience for travelers.

In short, visa policies are evolving to meet the needs of international travelers, and it is essential to keep up with these changes to take full advantage of the travel opportunities offered by different countries.
