“IBEDC: An offensive against electricity theft for a fair supply”

Title: Fight against electricity theft: IBEDC strengthens its actions

Electricity company IBEDC is stepping up its fight against electricity theft, a practice that causes significant financial losses for the company. Johnson Tinuoye, the Chief Accounts Officer of the company, revealed that more than 1,459 cases of electricity theft were recorded between January and February 2024, mainly through meter circumvention and illegal connections.

Faced with this worrying situation, IBEDC has established a strategic partnership with SIPTEO to accelerate investigations and legal proceedings against fraudsters. Tinuoye pointed out that electricity theft is now recognized as a criminal offense under the Electricity Act, punishable by heavy penalties, including imprisonment.

In Osun region, two individuals were apprehended for stealing energy by circumventing meters and making illegal connections. These cases have been taken to court for prosecution.

IBEDC wants to send a clear message to its customers: electricity theft will not be tolerated. The cooperation with SIPTEO demonstrates the company’s commitment to guaranteeing a fair and just electricity distribution system.

Johnson Tinuoye recalled that power theft not only compromises the integrity of IBEDC’s operations but also deprives the company of the revenue needed to provide quality services to its customers. He warned of the severe consequences of electricity theft and stressed that no discussions would be possible with the SIPTEO team, responsible for patrolling and investigating cases of electricity theft with a view to legal proceedings.

In conclusion, this determined action by IBEDC aims to deter electricity theft practices and ensure equitable electricity supply for all. The cooperation with SIPTEO and the legal actions taken against fraudsters send a clear message: fraud has no place in the electricity sector.
