“Humanitarian crisis in Kanyabayonga: the sad fate of those displaced by war in North Kivu”

In the news: Displaced by war in a humanitarian crisis in Kanyabayonga, North Kivu

The rural commune of Kanyabayonga, located in the Lubero territory in North Kivu, is the scene of a humanitarian tragedy which continues to worsen. Over the past two weeks, at least 12 war-displaced people have lost their lives, victims of food shortages and limited access to medical care.

According to Richard Kalume, responsible for war displaced people from Rutshuru in Kanyabayonga, the precariousness of their situation is alarming. Food deprivation, lack of adequate care and consumption of unsafe water are all factors contributing to these tragic deaths. He calls on the authorities to take responsibility and quickly return to peace, in order to allow the population to return to dignified living conditions.

The mayor of the municipality confirms this disastrous assessment, highlighting the difficult conditions in which the war displaced people of Rutshuru live in Kanyabayonga, after fleeing the occupation of their land by the M23-RDF coalition. This situation once again highlights the devastating consequences of war on civilian populations, who find themselves on the front lines of atrocities.

It is urgent that concrete measures be taken to help these displaced people by war, ensuring them access to food, health care and decent living conditions. The international community and local authorities must join forces to put an end to this ever-worsening humanitarian crisis in Kanyabayonga, North Kivu.
