The Beni region, located in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, lives in constant anguish due to deadly attacks perpetrated by rebels affiliated with the Islamic State, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). In recent months, the population has been the victim of a wave of violence, leaving more than 180 victims behind. Unfortunately, the Congolese army seems unable to contain this growing threat.
Recently, a double attack took place around the town of Beni, causing the death of at least eleven people. The ADF sowed terror in Matembo and Sayo, leaving the local population in shock. Residents deplore the lack of security despite the presence of the Congolese armed forces, Ugandan soldiers and MONUSCO peacekeepers. This situation raises questions about the effectiveness of military interventions in the region.
The recent attacks have sparked a wave of outrage among civil society leaders who are demanding stronger action from the Congolese army to protect civilians. Despite the joint military operation “Shujaa” launched in 2021, the ADF continues to sow terror, plunging the region into an endless cycle of violence. It is becoming urgent to strengthen measures to protect civilian populations to put an end to this spiral of violence.
It is essential that the international community continues to closely monitor the situation in Beni and support efforts to ensure the safety of residents. Let us hope that effective measures will be put in place to put an end to this unbearable violence which has continued for too long in the region.
