“A Chinese national sentenced to death in Nigeria for the murder of his girlfriend: Nigerian justice delivers its verdict”

Title: Chinese national sentenced to death in Nigeria for murder of girlfriend

A recent Nigerian court verdict sentenced a Chinese national, Frank Geng-Quangrong, to death for the murder of his girlfriend. The Kano State Court found Geng-Quangrong guilty of the murder of 22-year-old Ummukulsum Sani after he pleaded not guilty. This decision, according to the Commissioner for Justice of Kano, Haruna Dederi, sends a strong message on respect for the laws in force in society.

Death sentences for capital crimes are common in Nigeria, even for foreign nationals. In 2022, a Danish man was sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of his wife and daughter. However, executions remain rare because they require approval from state governors. Since 1999, only two execution warrants have been signed, according to Nigerian human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong.

Geng-Quangrong had claimed to have stabbed his girlfriend in self-defense in September 2022 at Kano’s home. He now has three months to appeal his conviction to Nigeria’s Court of Appeal.

This judgment highlights the importance of respecting the laws in a society and emphasizes that no one is above the established rules. Justice has been served and the final decision now rests with the Nigerian justice system.
