Access to drinking water is a major problem in many towns and villages in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite the efforts made, only 30% of Congolese have easy access to drinking water. In some neighborhoods, Regideso installations exist, but the taps have remained dry for years, leaving residents in disarray.
The dilapidated water distribution network is a major obstacle to the provision of drinking water throughout the country. Regideso, as the main agency responsible for water distribution, urgently needs financial resources to modernize its infrastructure and improve the quality of service.
To improve drinking water supply in the DRC, it is essential to take concrete actions. First of all, greater investments in the modernization of the distribution network are necessary. This will ensure a continuous supply of drinking water in all neighborhoods, even the most disadvantaged.
In addition, awareness campaigns on the importance of preserving water resources and good water use practices must be carried out on a large scale. Educating the population on sustainable water management is essential to guarantee equitable access to this vital resource.
Finally, better water governance is essential to ensure effective management of water resources in the DRC. It is essential to involve local actors, communities and civil society organizations in decision-making and the implementation of policies aimed at guaranteeing universal access to drinking water.
David Tshilumba Mutombo, Director General of Regideso, is a key player in the search for sustainable solutions to improve drinking water supply in the DRC. His vision and leadership are essential to meeting this crucial challenge and guaranteeing equitable access to drinking water for all Congolese.
