The commitment of peacekeeping troops is crucial to ensuring security and stability in conflict zones across the world. Recently, a unit composed of 15 officers and 142 soldiers, mainly from Nigerian Company 2 of the United Nations Interim Force in Abyei (NIGCOY 2 UNISFA), was deployed for this mission.
General Boniface Sinjen, Chief of Operations at Army Headquarters, highlighted the importance of this participation, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to contributing to global peace and security. He recalled that Nigeria had a long history of participation in peacekeeping missions, having deployed more than 100,000 troops since its first mission in Congo in 1960.
UNISFA’s mission is to protect civilians in danger, prevent incursions by unauthorized elements and provide security in the Abyei region. The troops underwent six weeks of pre-training to be prepared for the challenges they will face in the field.
It is essential that these troops respect the rules of engagement, human rights and demonstrate discipline to ensure the success of the mission. Soldiers were reminded not to engage in acts such as sexual exploitation and abuse that could sully the reputation of Nigeria.
As a reader, it is important to recognize and commend Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining peace across the world. Hopefully, these troops can help bring peace and stability to Abyei, demonstrating the strength and professionalism of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
