“Stabilization of commodity prices in the DRC: Crucial actions in the face of insecurity in the east of the country”

Improving the stability of commodity prices in areas affected by insecurity in the Democratic Republic of Congo is a major concern for the government. Persistent conflicts in the east of the country, particularly in the provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri, are hampering the supply of essential foodstuffs, thus affecting populations already weakened by insecurity.

Faced with this worrying situation, the Minister of State in charge of decentralization, Eustache Muhanzi Mubembe, stressed the need for economic intervention to support the ongoing diplomatic and military efforts. He highlighted the importance of stabilizing prices and ensuring supplies to areas affected by armed conflicts, in order to alleviate the difficulties encountered by local populations.

With this in mind, the government has begun technical work in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance to define the modalities of an intervention aimed at stabilizing prices and guaranteeing the supply of basic necessities in the east of the country. A complete file presenting these measures will be submitted to the Council of Ministers at the end of the commission’s work.

The Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly its eastern part, is confronted with activism by local and foreign armed groups. The resurgence of the M23 rebels, supported by external actors, has exacerbated the security situation in the region. This situation led to a takeover of certain areas of North Kivu by the rebels, thus hindering the supply of basic products and disrupting price stability in these regions.

Faced with these complex challenges, the government is implementing measures to meet the needs of populations affected by insecurity and to guarantee access to essential foodstuffs. This is a crucial issue to ensure food security and the well-being of residents in areas affected by armed conflicts in the DRC.

Alongside government actions, civil society, international organizations and the international community have an important role to play in supporting stabilization and reconstruction efforts in affected areas. It is imperative to promote peace, justice and sustainable development to allow populations to find a safe environment conducive to their development.

In conclusion, the issue of stabilizing commodity prices in insecure areas in the DRC requires an urgent and coordinated response. It is essential to combine political, economic and humanitarian efforts to meet the needs of affected populations and to promote a sustainable exit from the crisis.
