Eighteen fighters from the Maï-Maï Kyandenga group took a courageous decision by surrendering to the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) in the territory of Mambasa, 165 kilometers from Bunia. These militiamen, armed with weapons such as AK-47s, a PKM and a rocket launcher, responded to the President’s call to leave clandestinity to support the armed forces in tracking down foreign armed groups such as the ADF and the M23.
This initiative, welcomed by local authorities and the army, should encourage other misguided individuals to follow the same path to serve their nation. The Mai-Mai Kyandenga decided to surrender after clashes against other armed groups, which led to the arrest of one of their leaders.
The gesture of these militiamen shows the beginnings of awareness and commitment to peace in Ituri, a region often affected by insecurity. However, it is essential that the army maintains pressure on armed groups who continue to sow terror among civilian populations.
This decision by the Mai-Mai Kyandenga recalls the importance of the Disarmament, Demobilization and Community and Social Reintegration Program (PDDRC-S) as a means of peaceful reintegration of former combatants into society.
It is now essential to continue efforts to bring peace and stability to the Ituri region, by encouraging other negative forces to follow the example of these repentant militiamen.
