“Justice done: A vibrant tribute to Ambassador Luca Attanasio, three years after his tragic disappearance in the DRC”

Three years have passed since the sad disappearance of the Italian ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Luca Attanasio. The memory of this tragic incident remains vivid in people’s minds, and recently, Jean-Marc Chataigner, former ambassador of the European Union to the DRC, paid a vibrant tribute to his deceased friend.

“Three years ago, on February 22, 2021, my friend Luca, you were cowardly murdered in the exercise of your duties. With your bodyguard Vittorio and your driver Mustapha. I will never forget this crazy day. I will I will never forget you. Thoughts today for your family,” shared Jean-Marc Chataigner, then based in Cameroon.

This poignant testimony comes after the sentencing of six individuals to life imprisonment in Kinshasa for their involvement in the assassination of the Italian ambassador, his bodyguard and their driver in February 2021, in eastern DRC .

Luca Attanasio died from gunshot wounds when a UN World Food Program convoy was attacked north of Goma. The accused, presented as members of a “criminal gang”, were found guilty of murder, criminal conspiracy and illegal possession of weapons.

Despite the denials of the condemned, who denied their guilt throughout the trial, justice did its work, bringing a semblance of justice for Luca Attanasio, Vittorio and Mustapha.

Since April 2022, Alberto Petrangeli has taken over as Italian ambassador to the DRC, succeeding Luca Attanasio. The latter leaves behind a legacy of dedication and courage, reminding future generations of the importance of diplomatic service and the sacrifice of those who risk their lives for world peace and security.
