The constitutional review process in Nigeria is a crucial issue which was recently highlighted during the first meeting of the Committee charged with this mission. The Chairman of the Committee, Senator Barau Jibrin, highlighted the importance of this task and the Committee’s commitment to completing the constitutional amendments within the next 24 months.
This process does not aim to rewrite the 1999 Constitution, but to process the proposed amendments submitted to it. Senator Jibrin assured that the Committee will act diligently and follow a work plan to guide the amendment process. He also stressed the importance of collaboration with members of the House of Representatives and key stakeholders.
To achieve this goal, the Committee is committed to working in synergy with the House of Representatives and respecting the laws and rules governing legislative affairs, while demonstrating innovation where possible. Closely engaging stakeholders is essential to ensure approval of bills by State Assemblies and assent of the President.
Senator Jibrin urged the members of the Committee to fully engage in this constitutional review, emphasizing the delicate nature of certain subjects addressed by the stakeholders. This appointment to the Committee constitutes recognition of the experience and expertise of the legislators, as well as their key role in representing the interests of states and geopolitical zones.
This constitutional review process is therefore essential to meet the needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people, while strengthening the country’s democratic institutions.
