On February 20, 2024, exchanges of fire broke out in the Bas-Uele province, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, between the Congolese Armed Forces and the Central African armed group Seleka in Banda, in the Mopoy chiefdom.
The clashes were confirmed by administrative sources in the region, revealing that the attackers were seeking to pillage Mbororo herders in their camp. However, the soldiers valiantly repelled the attack, thus avoiding any loss of life.
Located on the border with the Central African Republic, the Bas-Uele province has often been the scene of armed conflicts, population movements and illicit trafficking. The arrival of the Seleka rebel group joins a long list of foreign armed groups fueling insecurity and instability in this region of eastern DRC.
This situation once again highlights the need for the Congolese authorities to strengthen border security and fight against the presence of foreign armed groups on the territory.
It is essential to closely monitor developments in this sensitive region, as this may have repercussions on regional stability and the security of local populations.
