“The Challenges and Opportunities of 6G and 7G Networks: Insights from the Lagos Conference on the Telecommunications Industry”

In the ever-changing world of telecommunications, there is much discussion around the advancements in 6G and 7G networks. At a two-day conference held in Lagos on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NCC), highlighted the potential challenges and opportunities of 6G and 7G networks.

Under the theme “Evolution and Management of Future Risks in the Telecommunications Industry: Harnessing Emerging Technologies and Trends”, this conference brought together industry experts to assess the potential risks and opportunities of the next generations of wireless technologies.

Mr. Maida, represented by Ubale Maska, Executive Commissioner for Technical Services of the Commission, highlighted the need for effective risk management in the telecommunications sector in anticipation of the adoption of these new technologies.

In an era of rapid technological advancement, the telecommunications industry finds itself at the forefront of innovation, shaping the way we communicate, connect and do business. In this dynamic environment, effective risk management is becoming increasingly essential.

According to Mr. Maida, at the intersection of tradition and transformation, new technologies and trends offer both unprecedented opportunities and significant challenges.

Highlighting the opportunities offered by 6G and 7G networks, Mr. Maida stressed that if emerging technologies such as quantum technologies, artificial intelligence and blockchain are effectively harnessed, they could positively transform the telecommunications industry .

Kelechi Nwankwo, Head of Corporate Strategy and Risk Management, NCC, concluded that addressing the risks associated with the emerging 6G network is the responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure growth and the sustainability of the telecommunications industry.
