“Delay in the case of the ex-president of the NDDC: justice awaiting the health of its lawyer”

When justice is interrupted by unforeseen circumstances, the wait can be burdensome for all parties involved. In a recent case involving the former Chairman of the Nigeria Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Committee, Hon. Nicholas Mutu, further proceedings were delayed due to the unavailability of his lawyer for reasons of health.

Case No. FHC/ABJ/CR/123/2019, in which Mutu is accused of participating in illegal activities between August 2014 and August 2016, was postponed due to the absence of his counsel, Patrick Ikwueto , SAN, for medical reasons. The prosecution alleges that Mutu conspired to conceal funds derived from bribery, bribery and fraudulent acquisition of property.

At the recent hearing, Mutu was present, but his lawyer was unable to appear. The EFCC lawyer informed the court of the situation and presented a medical certificate justifying the absence of Mutu’s lawyer. After discussion with stakeholders, the judge finally decided to postpone the case to March 20 and 21 to allow the defendants to present their defense.

It is unfortunate that delays occur in the justice system, but the health of lawyers is just as important as the pursuit of justice. Hopefully this case can move forward smoothly at the next hearing.
