The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Zoological Garden has unfortunately been forced to close its doors following a tragic incident. Indeed, Wole Odewumi, the President of the National Association of University Administrative Staff (NASU) branch of the OAU, revealed to journalists on Tuesday February 20, 2024 that the zoo was temporarily closed by the management of the ‘institution.
According to a statement by OAU spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, issued on Monday, February 19, Oluwuyi was fatally attacked by a male lion.
Explaining the incident further, Odewumi mentioned that Oluwuyi tried to intervene to rescue a woman who was first attacked by the lion, thinking that the animal would recognize him. Unfortunately, this intervention angered the animal, which turned towards Oluwuyi and fatally attacked him.
Before receiving necessary medical assistance, Oluwuyi succumbed to his injuries. The woman attacked is currently hospitalized for treatment.
In tribute to the victim, a funeral procession was organized at the university. The OAU management also met with Oluwuyi’s family to offer them support and assistance during this difficult time.
This tragic event led to the temporary closure of the OAU Zoological Gardens, to allow for additional safety measures and to evaluate the protocols in place for the protection of staff and visitors.
The University community as well as the public are deeply saddened by this loss and hope that actions will be taken to avoid any recurrence of such incidents in the future.
