“Key meeting between the European Union and the DRC: the challenges of cooperation for sustainable value chains”

Following the announcement of the agreement between the European Union and Rwanda regarding the development of sustainable value chains for critical raw materials, a key meeting took place between Nicolas Berlanga, Ambassador of the European Union to the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Christophe Lutundula, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the DRC.

During this meeting, Mr. Lutundula expressed the DRC’s reservations regarding this agreement, particularly with regard to the presence of Rwandan troops on Congolese territory. Nicolas Berlanga, for his part, reiterated the EU position on the crisis in eastern DRC and underlined the importance of transparency in mining value chains.

The ambassador confirmed the European Union’s commitment to combating illicit mineral trafficking and promoting sustainable value chains. He underlined the desire to collaborate with the DRC in the field of critical minerals, in accordance with agreements previously established between the two parties.

Just as with Rwanda, the agreement between the EU and the DRC aims to establish a strategic partnership on sustainable value chains of critical and strategic raw materials. A roadmap will be developed in the coming months to define concrete cooperation actions between Europeans and Congolese.

This meeting between Nicolas Berlanga and Christophe Lutundula illustrates the importance of international cooperation to promote sustainable development and security in the region. Ongoing discussions aim to strengthen ties between the EU and the DRC for a more prosperous and peaceful future for all.
