**Strengthening Security in Nigeria: Towards a Decentralized Approach to Law Enforcement**
The crucial question of national security is at the heart of current debates in Nigeria. Faced with an increase in cases of insecurity, political representatives are looking at innovative solutions to strengthen law enforcement. With this in mind, the debate has been launched regarding the creation of decentralized police forces at the state level, a proposal full of promise but also challenges.
MP Benjamin Kalu and his colleagues introduced a bill to amend the 1999 Constitution to authorize the establishment of state police forces. This proposal is based on the pressing need to adapt our approach to national security to the diversity and scale of the country. With its 36 states, 774 local authorities and more than 250 ethnic groups, Nigeria requires a more flexible security approach adapted to its local realities.
Indeed, the centralization of the current police system, which has fewer than 400,000 agents for more than 200 million citizens, is proving inadequate to face growing security challenges.
