“Women’s Month in the DRC: A celebration tinged with solidarity and mourning”

In a context marked by a worrying security situation in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the celebration of Women’s Month this year takes a particular turn. Indeed, the Minister of Gender, Family and Children, Mireille Masangua, made the decision not to organize joyful festivities with the wearing of loincloths, but rather to adopt an attitude of mourning to honor the women who suffer from violence in this region.

The launch of women’s month activities took place under the international theme “Investing in women: Accelerate the pace” and the national theme “Increasing the Necessary Resources for Women and Girls in Peace for an Equal Congo “. This initiative aims to raise awareness of the importance of investing in gender to promote the equitable development of society.

It should be noted that wearing black clothing is recommended during the activities planned for March 8, a symbol of solidarity with the women of eastern DRC. These events will continue until April, with a closing ceremony planned in Mbuji-Mayi, in the Kasai-Oriental province, in support of women victims of electoral violence.

Minister Masangua called on all provinces to celebrate this month in a spirit of solidarity with the women of the East, while encouraging the President of the Republic to work for the restoration of peace. In addition, the DRC will actively participate in the 68th session on the status of women in New York in March, with the objective of promoting the image of the country and defending its interests.

Furthermore, the minister officially launched the solidarity fund for victims in eastern DRC, inviting Congolese citizens to contribute financially and materially to support these women in distress. This initiative illustrates the need for mutual aid and collective mobilization to help the most vulnerable.

As we commemorate Women’s Month, it is essential to remember the challenges faced by many women in the DRC, particularly in regions affected by armed conflict. This is an opportunity to demonstrate our solidarity and commitment to their cause, and to support actions aimed at promoting gender equality and respect for women’s rights.
