In the rich and diverse world of African culture, Burundian and Rwandan societies stand out for their deeply rooted values and unique traditions. Recently, two Catholic bishops shared their perspective on these cultural aspects during their visit to Goma as part of the “Peace in the Great Lakes” program.
Monsignor Bonaventure Nahimana, Archbishop of Gitega in Burundi, stressed the importance of preserving the traditional values that define Burundian identity. These values, such as community solidarity, respect for elders and deep connection with nature, are at the heart of what we call “Murundi”, the soul of Burundi.
For his part, Monsignor Vincent Harolimana, Bishop of Ruhengeri in Rwanda, shared his point of view on Rwandan culture. It highlighted Rwanda’s rich and complex history, marked by unique traditions, sacred rituals and a deep sense of national unity despite past challenges.
Beyond these differences, these two countries also share cultural similarities, including a strong value placed on family, social justice and peace. The bishops stressed the importance of preserving and promoting these cultural values to strengthen unity and social cohesion in the Great Lakes region.
