The closure of the MONUSCO base in Baraka-Fizi: What future for South Kivu?

In a turbulent geopolitical context, the United Nations Stabilization Organization in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) has just announced the upcoming closure of its Baraka-Fizi sub-base, located in South Kivu. This decision, due to take effect on March 15, was revealed during a meeting of the Urban Security Council, chaired by the representative of the governor of the province and provincial minister of ITP, Gaston Cissa wa Numbe.

The establishment of this sub-base in September 2007 followed violence perpetrated by militiamen in the region. Over the years, the presence of MONUSCO in Baraka-Fizi has helped to ease certain tensions and strengthen local security. However, the withdrawal of this UN mission raises both concerns and hopes about the future of the region.

During the meeting, representatives of mutual societies, civil society organizations, youth, customary leaders and local services expressed their wish that MONUSCO’s equipment, furniture and rolling stock be transmitted to local state authorities after the departure of the mission. This request aims to ensure a smooth transition and guarantee the continuity of stabilization efforts in the region.

This major development underlines the importance of security issues in a period of transition for the Democratic Republic of Congo. The coming months will be crucial for the consolidation of achievements and the establishment of lasting mechanisms to ensure peace and stability in the South Kivu region.
