“African Union: Towards inclusive political transitions and initiatives for peace and democracy”

During the 37th African Union summit held in Addis Ababa, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye highlighted the growing concern of African leaders over the resurgence of instabilities on the continent. Recent military coups in countries such as Sudan, Gabon and Guinea have pushed the AU to take strict measures, even suspending these states for violating democracy.

However, the African Union is not content with sanctions; it also sets up initiatives such as the African Inclusive Transition Support Facility, aimed at supporting suspended states in their process of restoring constitutional order. This approach aims to promote effective and inclusive political transitions, ensuring respect for the constitutional order and the holding of transparent elections.

Furthermore, Ambassador Adeoye highlighted the AU’s commitment to democracy by mediating elections and political conflicts. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening the African Standby Force to guarantee security and peace on the continent, particularly in regions affected by conflicts, such as the Great Lakes, the Horn of Africa and the Sahel.

Finally, he praised the mediation work of Angolan President João Lourenço in the persistent conflict between Kinshasa and Kigali in eastern DRC, emphasizing the need to restore security and peace in these sensitive regions.

This African Union summit highlighted the challenges facing the continent, but also the efforts made to promote democracy, peace and stability in Africa. He stressed the importance of regional and international cooperation to address these challenges and build a better future for all Africans.
